Harnham Hall Estate

The Harnham Hall Estate lies in the beautiful Northumberland countryside, half way between Newcastle Upon Tyne and the Northumberland National Park.

We are proud to offer two stunning self catering holiday lets.  Longriggs is an off-the-grid, glamping cabin, set on the edge of a 14 acre hayfield offering privacy and seclusion for 2 people.  The second property is Harnham Hall Cottage, our most recent addition, which is a beautiful stone built holiday cottage for up to 8 people.

Our two self catering holiday lets are ideally placed for those who enjoy leisurely walks and a connection with nature.  Whilst Harnham offers a peaceful retreat in a rural location, it is also within a few miles of several local attractions including National Trust and English Heritage properties.  Bolam Lake is within 2 miles and is a country park with woodland, lakeside walks and a small cafe.  Belsay Hall is an English Heritage site that includes a medieval castle and has recently undergone renovation.  Roughly 5 miles away is Wallington Hall, a National Trust site with a historical house, extensive gardens, woodland, and cafe.

Harnham Hall Estate also provides an ideal base from which to explore the North East, including it’s UNESCO World Heritage site of Hadrian’s Wall.  The Northumberland Coastline is within reach with it’s seaside towns, rich history, castle and fabulous food.

Here are a few reviews from our lovely guests...

Seeing all the lovely reviews from our guests makes all the hard work we put into Harnham Hall Estate worth it.

We had the most relaxing weekend at Longriggs. It felt as though time stood still in that little cabin on top of the hill. The set up was perfect and it was as private as could be. All amenities were amazingly thought out and the bath tub outside is a great touch to be at one with nature! We'll 100% be visiting again and would recommend to anyone looking for a taste of tranquility within the Northumbrian countryside.

We had a lovely stay in the beautiful countryside. Everything about Longriggs made the visit incredibly special from the cosy log burner to the unique outdoor bath! There are so many facilities in and outside the barn. John has done an excellent job with the interior, it’s absolutely amazing!

We stayed at Longriggs to visit family in Northumberland, but also to have a rural break away from London. The barn was clearly a labour of love for the owner John with a lot of thought going in to every aspect. The result was a great balance between home comforts and outdoor living. Great cooking facilities outside with both gas and a camp fire, an outside bath to soak under the stars, but also a great bathroom with shower inside and of course the wood burning stove. Superb all round and lovely rural spot away from any neighbours. Perfect.

Great stay! The accommodation was brilliant, in a lovely setting and location and the host was very helpful and accommodating. We're already planning on going back in the summer. Would highly recommend!

Just back from a night in Longriggs at Harnham Hall. Wow! The cabin is beautifully created with a roaring log fire and huge comfortable bed. There is a fully stocked kitchen with everything you could need to cook with. There is a lovely fire pit to sit around outside and watch the stars as night falls. A lovely homemade cake to welcome on arrival. Will definitely be back

MEET YOUR HOST

John Charlton

Owner & Farmer

In 2019, John relocated to Harnham owing to the expansive growth of his cattle herd, which he had painstakingly cultivated over two decades and which had outpaced the capacity of his farm. Upon his initial arrival at the Harnham estate with his cattle, he found a cluster of dilapidated old structures. The historical charm of Harnham Hall, replete with folklore and century-old narratives, swiftly captured his heart.  John embarked on the herculean task of refurbishing the Estate, aiming to revitalise the antiquated buildings that had lost their agricultural use.

Among the myriad of projects he has undertaken on the estate, Longriggs holds a special place in John’s heart. Located remotely in a corner of the hay meadow and encapsulated by a small stretch of woodland, the dilapidated byre at Longriggs beckoned to be saved.

John’s passion is not merely in the restoration of the estate but also in the stories and historical significance that it carries. In homage to the attention to detail that ancient builders invested in these structures, John believes it is his duty to utilise traditional materials as much as possible in their restoration. He prioritises the use of reclaimed materials when introducing new elements to the buildings, honouring the past while breathing life into the present.
